We are learning the alphabet.  Go to the tab above entitled Spanish IA (First Half) to find some practice exercises and videos for that.

All vowels will ALWAYS be pronounced the same way.  It’s important to learn that pronunciation right away so that reading new words will be easy for you.

Have you turned in your paper with signatures saying that you have read the syllabus for Spanish class? 

BE SURE THAT YOU HAVE A 3-RING BINDER FOR CLASS.  We don’t use a book, so the information in your binder and on my websites are your study tools.

REMEMBER to REVIEW what we do in class just 15 minutes per night and do all of the work for class, and you will have no problems in Spanish class.

TO GREET SOMEONE, SAY:

Hello! – ¡Hola! (“h” is silent)
Good morning, sir. – Buenos días, señor.
Good afternoon, Mrs. – Buenas tardes, señora.
Good night, Miss. – Buenas noches, señorita.
Mr. = Sr.
Mrs. = Sra.
Miss = Srta.

TO SAY GOODBYE TO SOMEONE, SAY:

Goodbye. – Adiós. (accents are used to show the stressed vowel when the word doesn’t follow the pronunciation rules)
Well, I have class. – Bueno, tengo clase.
Bye. – Chao
See you later. – Hasta luego.
See you tomorrow. – Hasta mañana.
I have to go. – Tengo que irme.

Practice spelling… this way:

Close your eyes.

Write the word “la pierna” (or whatever word you are studying) in your own handwriting across your forehead in your mind.  (Not literally)

Now spell it out loud in Spanish…

Keep your eyes closed.  Now spell it backward in Spanish.

Keep your eyes closed.  Now spell it forward again in Spanish.

Now open your eyes.

Write the word.

This has created (or imprinted) a mental image that you can use later when you close your eyes and try to spell the word.

Then give yourself a quiz from English to Spanish. 

PRACTICE THOSE WORDS HERE:

Two important rules to help you pronounce words:

1. If a word ends in a vowel, an “n”, or an “s”, stress the next to the last syllable.
Examples:
cabeza – Stress the next to the last syllable, “be”.
hombro – Stress the next to the last syllable, “hom”.
2. If a word ends in any other consonant, stress the last syllable.
Examples:
libertad – Stress the last syllable, “tad”.
conquistador – Stress the last syllable, “dor”.
3. If a word doesn’t follow those two rules, the vowel will need an accent (á, é, í, ó, ú) to show where to stress the word.
Examples:
lección – It doesn’t follow the rule. It ends in “n” but the stress is on the “o”.
José – It doesn’t follow the rule. It ends in a vowel, but the stress is on the “e”.
One more thing: These vowels are strong: a, e, o. These vowels are weak: u, i. If there is a weak vowel next to a strong vowel, you will stress the strong vowel more. suave
