The personal “a”

It has no translation in English, but it is needed in Spanish.
Does the sentence need a personal “a” or not? – After the verb, ask Whom?
If there is a person that answers that question, you need to use the “a”.

Examples:
El muchacho ve a la muchacha.

The boy sees whom? the girl – She is a person, so you need an “a” after the verb.
Juanita ve al muchacho
Juanita sees whom? the boy – He is a person, so you need an “a” after the verb. (Remember that “a el” becomes “al”)
El muchacho ve el río.
The boy sees whom? There is no person that the boy sees,
so you don’t use an “a” after the verb.
